What happens when you diet and exercise
What happens to body fat when you shed pounds—do you sweat, pee, or breathe it in? The answer is yes, yes and yes.
How does this happen? “It helps to understand that our bodies are designed to store excess energy in fat cells.”
If you’re putting on extra pounds, that means you’re consuming more energy (calories are energy units) than you use.
Excess energy is stored in fatty tissues throughout the body in the form of triglycerides. Less energy is stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen.
How does your body use energy? In more ways than you think:
when you rest. Your heart needs the energy to pump, the lungs to breathe, and your brain to think. (This is your basal metabolism.)
when you are active. Your muscles need energy whether you’re getting up from a chair or a marathon.
when you eat. The digestive system needs energy to break down and store food.
What happens to body fat when you diet?
When you diet, you take in fewer calories than your body needs. Because of this deficit, your body turns to fat reserves for energy.
Your body must get rid of fat deposits through a series of complex metabolic pathways.
The byproducts of fat metabolism leave your body:
As water, through your skin (when you sweat) and your kidneys (when you urinate).
As carbon dioxide, through your lungs (when you breathe in).
Meanwhile, energy fats are burned for biological functions and physical activity. “It also generates heat, which keeps body temperatures normal.”
What happens to body fat when you exercise?
Your muscles first burn through stored glycogen for energy. “After about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise, your body basically starts burning fat.” (If you exercise in moderation, this takes about an hour.)
Experts recommend at least 30 minutes of cardio two to three times a week.
They also recommend weight lifting and resistance exercises. Increasing muscle mass may help you burn more calories and raise your basic metabolic rate.
Exercising increases your respiratory rate, so more carbon dioxide leaves your body when you exercise.
About exercise and weight loss
“Exercise is essential to losing weight and maintaining that weight.”
But it may take a while for the number to move around your range, so be patient.
Everyone’s response to exercise is different: some people lose weight, some keep it, and others may gain a few pounds.
“In general, though, people who successfully lose and maintain weight tend to be physically active — up to an hour a day.
“It is highly recommended to get some exercise three times a week.”
